Catholic Leader: Gov. Gavin Newsom Citing Scripture to Promote Taking Life of Unborn Baby ‘Demonic’

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D) decision to rent billboard space to use scripture to promote the abortion industry in his state amounts to “demonic behavior,” wrote Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League Tuesday.

Newsom rented billboards in pro-life states – which he refers to as “anti-freedom” states – for ads attacking their abortion restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

The governor has also turned to scripture to urge women to “come to California” to have the lives of their unborn babies ended.

Newsom’s ads cite the words of Jesus Christ in the gospel of Mark 12:31: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”

CASE

“This is not in bad taste – it is demonic,” Donohue wrote. “To advertise in other states for women to come to California to have their children killed – in the name of God – is demonic.”

Kathleen Domingo, executive director of the California Catholic Conference, also described Newsom’s ads to Catholic News Agency as “unconscionable” and “nothing more than a political stunt.”

“[T]hese ads distort Scripture to support abortion, specifically in states that have already dramatically limited abortion in favor of supporting life,” Domingo said.

“It is virtue-signaling that California, with our extremely permissive abortion laws, is superior to red and purple states enacting abortion restrictions,” she added, noting the context of the ads amid the economic devastation many families are facing under Newsom’s administration:

California is not just providing abortions but promoting abortion as a solution for women. When California families are struggling to pay for gas, afford rent, and put food on the table, promoting the violence of abortion solves none of the urgent problems countless families are facing.

The billboards, which are funded by Newsom’s re-election campaign, are up in Indiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Oklahoma.

The Democrat governor, who survived a 2021 recall campaign and is expected to win his re-election bid in November, uses the terminology of the abortion business – specifically, that ending the life of an unborn human being is the equivalent of “health care.”

Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report revealed the abortion industry giant performed 383,460 abortions – the highest number it has yet reported – while also receiving a raise of $15.3 million from American taxpayers from the previous year.

Planned Parenthood’s actual “health care” provided has decreased substantially over the past decade, as summarized by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), the research arm of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Since 2010, Planned Parenthood’s:

  • Total services are down 21.4 percent.
  • With changing practice guidelines, total cancer screening and prevention services have dropped by 74 percent, including declines of 77 percent for breast exams and 74 percent for pap tests.
  • Prenatal services are down 72 percent.
  • Contraceptive services are down 41 percent.
  • Unique patients have dropped by 840,000 since 2010 – a 28 percent decline.

Yet, despite the decline in most of its actual “health care” services, “Planned Parenthood reported $1.7 billion in income in year 2020-2021, and over $2.1 billion in net assets – an increase since last year,” CLI noted.
