Governor DeSantis Applauds Supreme Court Following Ruling Overturning Roe v. Wade

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a statement Friday following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling that created a right to abortion nationwide. The ruling now returns issues about abortion to the individual states.

The Star News Network previously reported in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion, released Friday, that was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

The High Court held: “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.”

The case centered on whether the state of Mississippi may enforce its 15-week abortion ban.

In response to the ruling, Republican lawmakers across the nation have applauded the High Court.

“The prayers of millions have been answered,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis shared in a statement on social media. “For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history of structure of the Constitution. By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobbs majority has restored the people’s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts.”

“Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care and child welfare,” the Governor concluded.

“By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Supreme Court has answered the prayers of millions upon millions of Americans,” Governor DeSantis added as a caption to his statement.

The High Court’s decision comes after a draft opinion was leaked in early May that foreshadowed the ruling overturning Roe. In response, the leak drew acts of violence by abortion activists at pro-life pregnancy care centers and churches, threatening protests at the homes of several Supreme Court justices, and an assassination attempt against Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
