Florida’s prepaid toll program, SunPass, announced the addition of the SunPass PRO on Friday that will allow Floridians to travel through other states’ tolls with only one toll account.
The announcement comes after the Florida Turnpike Enterprise partnered with 35 toll agencies across 19 states who utilize E-ZPass for prepaid tolls which will now accept SunPass PRO.
The original SunPass Portable and SunPass Mini were accepted in only Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina, whereas SunPass PRO is accepted in those three states along with Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Florida first started accepting E-ZPass in 2017, but only for travelers who utilize the Central Florida Expressway as opposed to other toll roads. Now that the SunPass Pro is interchangeable with E-ZPass, travelers who do not have a SunPass but use E-ZPass will now be allowed to go through all prepaid toll roads in Florida.
Another advantage of upgrading to SunPass PRO is the ability to pre-pay for parking at international airports in Florida including Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa airports as well as parking at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The SunPass PRO is $14.95 plus tax and is available for purchase at a number of retail locations across the state of Florida including Publix, Walgreens, and CVS Pharmacy. You can also purchase the SunPass PRO by calling 1-88-TOLL-FLA, or online at SunPass.com.
According to a press release from the Secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation, Kevin Thibault, “Florida’s partnership with E-ZPass is the next critical step toward national interoperability creating seamless transportation options for Florida residents and visitors alike.”
Not only will Floridians benefit from the new partnership, but it should allow for easier and cheaper travel into the state by out-of-state visitors that could contribute to a boost in Florida’s tourism industry ahead of Summer 2021.
